After entering in all the right details for the install, I click on the RUN THE INSTALL link (below), and I get a blank page and Firefox says DONE... immediately. She never even launches! What's up with that?

All right sparky! You've made it through this part of the installation. WordPress can now communicate with your database. If you are ready, time now to run the install!

Well, it's in wp-settings.php I think. I've never got it during an install either.

NORTH, could you give some info about the server you're installing on and so forth?

I completed the prior page (below) and clicked SUBMIT.

Below you should enter your database connection details. If you're not sure about these, contact your host.
Database Name The name of the database you want to run WP in.
    User Name Your MySQL username
    Password ...and MySQL password.
Database Host 99% chance you won't need to change this value.
Table Prefix If you want to run multiple WordPress installations in a single database, change this.

Right.... but how about the server itself? What host? What's the database name, the database username, and so on?

Only other thing I can think of is who's your hosting provider? Some of them do have some odd things going on, a search using google and the host name might turn up something. That database name pattern is different - I've not seen anything like that before. And you're sure there shouldn't be a "username_" appended to "barbary"?

I've never had to do "username_" prefix on any other php installs.

What the hell is wrong with this software? You can't even install it!

Right. It actually hates you as it works for a kabillion other folks.

Say, as I scroll through this thread, I note that you've not mentioned what OS is hosting your server. Or who the provider is? Those might be useful to know about now.

I'm not sure what the OS is, to be honest.. but the host is http://www.doteasy.com

I have to use the username_ prefix on every host I've had over the last umpteen years.... it's probably pretty common.

Which version of doteasy are you using? The free version doesn't appear to come with a database. And also doesn't have any php capabilities.

I just had the exact same problem, running install.php returned a blank page.

Deleting all WordPress files on the server and uploading again solved my problem. Maybe some of the files was corrupted during my first upload, which was from a machine running Windows XP using Windows Explorer as ftp client. Second upload was from my home computer running Ubuntu Linux 5.10.

Hmmmm.... good idea, I'm trying it right now.

Ok, that made a huge difference. I appear to be installed now, however, it NEVER asked me for my database name, password... so I'm suspicious where the posts are getting stored.

AND when I click on LINKS in the Admin, I get this error:

XML error: Invalid document end at line 1

I feel so close to getting a functional install here.

Does your wp-config.php have the expected values for your database connection?

I don't understand what you are saying. Didn't you have to put all the info regarding the database in the config file before you started the install process? Meaning you define where the posts are stored...

Wait, yes you're right.. I must haved edited the config a few days ago... still confused, however, why when I click on LINKS in the Admin, I get this error:

XML error: Invalid document end at line 1

Perhaps the failed install hosed my DB, and I need to start all over, wiping the DB as well. I'll try that next.

    The error might be cause by a corrupted file (=needs fresh down- and upload); by opening the file in some editor that would mess up line ends; wrong unzip;
... and who know what else.
Sorry, I know you are not in mood for jokes, but judging by how did you start that initial install - nothing seems to be done as they say in the online manual, the Codex:
    Installing_WordPress

Good times... I wiped everything, followed the instructions EXACTLY, and I now get the following response when I hit the install.php:

    Feature disabled.

I am not very well versed in slang (Englishh is not my mother tongue), so what exactly is "I hit the install.php"?

Does it mean you type in the address bar of your browser the address example.com/blog-folder/wp-admin/install.php?

Last question: is this a hosted environment or is it hosted by yourself?

I do think if this were me that I'd contact my host support and inquire as to whether the particular server on which I was being hosted was able to run wp.

As I said earlier, if you're on one of doteasy's free servers, it doesn't appear that they will support installation of wp.

Oops, I missed that post about the host. Sorry.

I am NOT on one of Doteasy's free servers. I have TONS of PHP scripts installed on my server with MySQL backends.

Surely, someone understand why the install.php would output "Feature disabled."... and therefore, how to get around it.

I already got the install to work half way through this thread, everything worked great but the LINKS section of the ADMIN.

TAAA DAA!!! It works! I wiped once again... deleted the db, deleted all files, deleted my local copy, redownloaded the source, re configured the config file, re setup the db, etc... AND this time I uploaded to my server with a new folder name... not sure if that had anything to do with it, but hey, the install worked, and my LINKS section works!

Now to test the blogger import.

    Cheers everyone...

Yea, there is something going on with the source folder. How can I explain this. I originally unzipped the source files into a folder on my host titled wordpress201. I then found I had to delete the files in that folder, and reinstall them several times, since I made mistakes. However, when I ran the install.php, I was getting "Feature Disabled".

However, if I rename the folder "wordpress201" to "wordpress", then the install.php worked.

    STRANGE!
