    Hi folks,

I am setting up a website for a new venture, I am the most technical person in the group and so have been given the task of setting it all up.

I plan on setting up Multi-site with different domain names for each site. I am using another person’s server space, where they already had a WordPress website.

For my multi-site I attempted to move the WP install to root & this is where the confusion is. Can I move my install to the root with my server.

See below, the primary website’s space on the server is not directed to the root and seemingly cannot be changed as the WordPress app is installed.

I have spent a lot of time on the docs and it is still unclear to me what “ensure your WP install is in the root of your website” actually means.

Originally the WP site would open at http://www.example.com/wordpress and I changed it so now http://www.example.com is where the site is. Have I changed the root or does it mean the actual WordPress folder or the contents of the folder.

I am very confused and extremely frustrated. All help is very much appreciated!

    Thanks

I hope to not add to your confusion, but are you certain you want multisite rather than simply having multiple sites (more than one site) on one server? Then, I believe things can vary a bit from one server to the next. For example: At BlueHost, I have three sites sitting side-by-side in their own folders inside my “root” (public_html), and I have not had to change anything inside any installation. Rather, I have only had to add a specific .htaccess in “root” to point to the primary (first) site than had initially been installed there. At least for me, that keeps everything neat, tidy and logical rather than having one installation in “root” and all the others elsewhere.

I have spent a lot of time on the docs and it is still unclear to me what “ensure your WP install is in the root of your website” actually means.

    It means this:

If your WP files are in /home/username/domain.com/ then THAT is root.

If they’re in /home/username/public_html/ then THAT is root.

If they’re in /home/username/public_html/wordpress then that is NOT root. That is a subfolder.

Now you can run WP Multisite out of a subfolder and have it use the ‘root’ URL (domain.com and not domain.com/wordpress), but you want to set that up before activating WordPress.

If regular WordPress is installed so you can access it at domain.com then you are good to go 🙂
