root directory 1&1 index.html needs deleting

    Hello,

    My first day with wordpress… going to use it for my new website.

    Followed the installation instructions, did the install on my 1&1 hosted server, put it into the root directory. Took a few more than the famous five minutes, but went well enough.

    Got into wp-admin, changed my settings, all very fine. Got an email confirming I was good “Your new WordPress blog has been successfully set up at:..”

    Then spent several hours figuring out why “visit website” from admin failed, as did typing my url into the browser.

    Finally found this document:

    And deduced that index.html was being accessed rather than index.php…

    Took a deep breath and deleted index.html, now it works as it should.

    Really hard to discover the problem, so I hope this post may help the next unfortunate.
