Roles strange problem

    In creating an author role, I find I have to have either the:
    Edit Others Pages
    or
    Edit Others Post
    boxes checked in order for an author to post at all.

    I already have all the other edit stuff checked, but I would not like them to edit other people’s posts.
    Latest version of wordpress.

    Clarification would be appreciated.
