Robots.txt file "404" error

I am unable to view my robots.txt file. I have found out that wordpress should automatically create one for me, as I have my privacy settings set to allow search engines to view my site. Also I have content to search ect. but tno robots.txt file seems to be created, vitual or otherwise. I have even installed plugins (like irobots, pc-robots.txt) but to no avail. If anyone could help me to understand why, that would be great.
