Category Access allows you to limit, by user, what categories the person sees when editing posts. This applies to just Authors and Subscribers which makes sense. Can also control what categories are not displayed on the blog but within limits (will hide the_content and the_title, but not the_time,the_date, the_category) Can also restrict what categories guests (not logged in) see on blog.

Thanks for the response Michael. Unfortunately that doesn’t work quite the way I need it to. I should have mentioned that my aim is that visitors can see all categories, and subscribers can only post to a single category.
The idea is that admins write in news categories, and casual visitors have their own “chatter” category – they can comment anywhere, but start their own post only in this one.
Am I asking for the impossible?
I still think the plugin will do the job.
If your visitors login, then they ‘aren’t casual visitors’.
For Anonymous Users (non-logged in users) you can “Set the visibility of categories for users that are not logged in below. Usually this is the same as or more restrictive than the access granted to new users.”
For New Users (subscribers, contributors, and authors) you can restrict categories for the whole. Or you can restrict categories for each user.

Sorry for looking dim, but I have the latest version of the plugin and I don’t see the text you quote? Did you mistakenly post a URL to a different but very similarly named plaugin?! I’m a bit boggled.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. I played around with that a little but it’s not right for me. Seems more orientated around having “members only” viewable content rather than content open to all that, but initial posting can only be started by low ranked roles in a single category.
Using this method with my setup causes confusion as when you log in, you can no longer see many of the categories (you expect signing up/logging in to see more, not less!). Of course, it does restrict the roles you can see to post to, but the byproduct of lots of categories disappearing from the front-end is too bizarre.
I hope it’s okay to piggyback a question here.
Sometimes if I create a blog for someone with very simple level skills, they look at the Dashboard for the first time and panic. It would be great to only present them with the tools they need. For instance, New post, edit post, delete post.
That would keep them safe from doing harm to things they don’t know how to use, but go experiment with. Limiting access and visibility of Dashboard functions would also eliminate the sometimes difficult situation, where they want you to spend time teaching them far more about WP than you want to. Yes, I guide them to the best books and resources, but as they say, “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” – So, ability to limit what the Dashboard does and does not display would be an awesomely useful feature or plug in. is this in any way possible?
