Restoring lost FB likes after changing the WP permalink? (3 posts)

    Hello,

I have searched the web on this and have found limited feedback.

I have recently changed to WP Socializer and have stopped using my old plugin and in the process have lost all the fb likes and also some comments too. I am aware that this might be irreversible but if anyone has any comments that would be great.

In the proces of installing the new plugin, I was changing my permalink around, at the time I didn't know I would lose all the likes so I am not fully sure what different things I did, but this is what I remember:

The "Custom Structure" button was selected, with my custom blog link in it: "http://thecompasswithin.com/blog" and I had the "/%postname%/" in that field. (this had been set up in the past by someone who helped me put the website/blog together. So I was just playing around with it to see what it does.
Once I did something it changed to the button: "Post name" with the unchangeable link: "http://thecompasswithin.com/blog/sample-post/"
I've tried changing it to custom but every time I would save it, it would just go to the new setting..

In the meantime, I started getting new likes on new blog posts... So, does anyone know if it's possible to "find", somehow "integrate" and a "combine" all the likes together, or am I being overly optimistic?

This is the blog in case it helps.

    Thanks for comments!

Ran into this same issue. Facebook assigns the likes to the url, so there's no way to "combine" the likes. What you can do though is modify the url that the like button uses. So you could make all the past posts from a set date pull the old links. What I did was set it to check how old the post was and then determine whether it kept the current permalink or reverted it. I used this article to modify the php for the plugin I was using. Hope it helps, or gets you pointed in the right direction. http://encosia.com/preserving-social-sharing-counters-through-a-url-change/

    Thanks for the response.
A friend recommended me to switch to WP Socializer (and disqus comment plugin) which have been great and I'm not using the old fb comments plugin that I had before.. So I thought maybe somehow I can find a way to integrate the old fb plugin comments and likes into the new structure.. Wishful thinking I suppose.. Or maybe not?
I am also very new to VP and messing with code so also a bit reluctant to not mess things up further by poking around. Is this approach pretty "disaster proof" for newbies? :)
