restore backup files using FTP (2 posts)

I would like to restore my site from backups I made. I found information in the codex and forums on restoring the database, but can't seem to find anything on restoring the files.

I used an FTP client to copy my root directory to my computer, I would like to use it to restore those backed up files now. I imagine I should be able to just drag and drop the backed up files in, overwriting the current ones, but do I need to delete any old files first? If so, do I delete the entire root or do certain files need to remain intact to keep my site from breaking or messing up connection with the database? There have been some changes in my content since my last backup, so I think there are files and folders in my current root that don't have a corresponding file or folder in the backup, so it would seem those current files wouldn't be overwritten or deleted when the backup is restored, unless I delete things first.

Also, does it matter if I restore the files or database first?

Thank you for any help you can give, or suggested reference tutorials.

Create a subfolder and include the backed up files there, then contact your webhost on how to point your domain to the new files and see Moving WordPress. I would also import to a new clean DB and make sure to update wp-config.php accordingly. When site is up and tested, remove old DB and files (but make sure to keep webhost/server required files in root)
