Wow. I have been through the countless threads on the topic of TinyMCE in WordPress. Specifically, my editor was not showing any formatting buttons, and the Visual tab was “active”, although I could only see HTML tags in the typing area. Clicking the HTML tab had no effect.

I have been replacing files left and right from a working version on one site to a non-working version on another site. I took a look at the errors Firebug’s Console was giving me, and it kept bringing up errors in wp-includes/js/tinymce/themes/advanced/editor_template.js.

As soon as I replaced this file, and did a Control+F5 refresh in Firefox, bam, it worked. Nothing else was working, including the deleting browser cache and all that jazz.

Anyway, just posting this here in the hopes that it may help another lost soul. 🙂

Make sure that if this method worked for you – post here about your story! I’d love to know that I helped out at least one person. 🙂

I have another problem with timyMCE: In ‘html’ mode the cursor is text window is jumping to the top of the text, whenever I stop typing. It is very annoing because you never know where the cursor is.

I tried your trick, to copy editor_template.js, but it did not help.

that didn’t work for me…. running newely updated copy of 2.8 from 2.7.1 and having this issue only on one blog/site.

updated tinymce to svn version and didn’t fix… errrggg… annoying

Had exactly the same problem. Replacing the template file didn’t work, but replacing the entire tinymce folder did.
Thanks for the pointer in the right direction!

    not working…

tiny_mce_config.php has disappeared and I replaced it
I also replaced the editor_template.js file, but it didn’t help me…

This is the most annoying bug!

I will try to modify the whole folder.

    hey I did it!

I downloaded a new copy of WordPress 2.8 and I copied the tinymce folder from wp-includes/js/ to the same folder on my FTP account. Then I cleared my browser history, cache and private data.

    Now it works again!

I did the same as mihneaboiangiu and it worked!

    Thanks for finding the solution.

I tried mihneaboiangiu’s fix and it didn’t work for me 🙁

I also tried irishb’s fix, since he/she didn’t say what file he/she used to replace the existing one, I took the one from my last version (2.7 something) and tried that, no happy dance here 🙁

I noticed there are several changes in that js/tinymmce folder, for example the wordpress.css is not there, some other files are not there, there’s a zip file in there now which I thought was strange. I checked my previous version, no zip file in that one.

I had the jumping cursor too, it was driving me crazy… every time i entered a space, or pasted or navigated out of the edit area the text was displayed from the top but the cursor remained in the correct location – i am in IE8. So i set my site to ‘compatibility view’ from IE8 tools menu option and that resolved the problem for me… hope this helps

Thank you for the ‘compatibility view’ tip. It made my day. My authors who are using IE8 in Windows have been going nuts with their text jumping back up to the top, every time they highlight some text and try to click on “Bold” or some other button in the toolbar.
