instead of having the editor default to either simplified or advanced for all users, could this option be made part of an individual's profile/preferences?

I'd vote for this in a hot second. It just delays the process for me since I use advanced editing EVERY time.

The entire user system is slated for overhaul. This will include per-user preferences. Don't look for it in 1.3, however. It'll probably [1] be in the release following 1.3.
1: Emphasis on the non-comittal probably. Anything could happen, or not happen.
