I have a current WP site that is broken in some respects that I have found no way of repairing. So, I created a new instance of the site, with a new installation of WP, my themes, plugins, posts, pages uploads and everything, all within the subfolder (/test/) of the current site on my server. This works perfectly.
I am now ready to replace the current www.site.com with the new www.site.com/test. I have backed up database and all files as per CODEX instruction. I have carefully read through the following:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress#Moving_WordPress_Within_Your_Site
    and
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

The process is still unclear to me because these instructions seem to refer to moving sites between servers or to new domains where no WP site was before. I am merely looking to replace the current site with the new one which actually exists within the same folder hierarchy with the URL resolving to site.com without the need for /test/.

One thing that is unclear is: Will the processes outlined in the above CODEX files allow me to keep my media files where and as they are inside the /test/uploads/ folder in order to maintain Library associations in the database? I have found that moving anything from the default library folder strips it of any added “Caption” or “Description” information. This is my number one issue as all that text took some time to enter and I would not like to lose it (again).

I don’t mind having and using the /test/ folder as the location on the back end. I guess the question is can I keep that and have the front end URLs resolve to site.com without the /test/ having to be there.

Anther thing that’s not clear is: Do I then delete the files from the “old” WP installation and site?

Mind you, these are the questions of a novice.

  • This documentation explains how to run WordPress from a folder, but make it look like it is running in the root (just the domain name to access). No media files are moved or changed during the process.

You don’t have to delete the “old” WordPress installation and site, though you will be replacing the old index.php and .htaccess files in the process of following the instructions. BUT, you are advised to delete the old installation and site, or you risk getting very confused about which files are old and which are new.
