Replacing Header text with logo image
-
I want to replace the header text on my site with a logo image. I’ve tried following the instructions on other forum posts to no avail, and my website editing knowledge is rudimentary at most so I would be grateful for detailed instructions.
Here’s a link to my site: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/
The logo I wish to insert is: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CR-logo.jpg
Here’s what it says in the Appearance editor section:
/* =Header
———————————————– */#branding {
border-top: 2px solid #bbb;
padding-bottom: 10px;
position: relative;
z-index: 9999;
}
#site-title {
margin-right: 270px;
padding: 3.65625em 0 0;
}
#site-title a {
color: #111;
font-size: 30px;
font-weight: bold;
line-height: 36px;
text-decoration: none;
}
#site-title a:hover,
#site-title a:focus,
#site-title a:active {
color: #1982d1;
}
#site-description {
color: #7a7a7a;
font-size: 14px;
margin: 0 270px 3.65625em 0;
}
#branding img {
height: auto;
display: block;
width: 100%;
}Thanks in advance!

Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. First create a child theme for your changes. Or install a custom CSS plugin.
Hi there, I followed the instructions and made a twentyeleven-child folder with a functions.php file inside. On the functions.php file I wrote this:
function logo_link() {
echo ‘<link rel=”http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CR-logo.jpg” type=”image/x-icon” href=”/CR-logo.jpg” />’ . “\n”;
}
add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘logo_link’ );but nothing has changed. What do I do now? Thanks!
You need to create a custom copy of header.php in your child theme.
I see. Do I need put this copy of the header data in the functions.php file I’ve already created or do I need to create a separate header.php file in the child theme as well?
Also, when you say custom copy do you mean all of the following data, or just some of it?
<?php /** * The Header for our theme. * * Displays all of the <head> section and everything up till <div id="main"> * * @package WordPress * @subpackage Twenty_Eleven * @since Twenty Eleven 1.0 */ ?><!DOCTYPE html> <!--[if IE 6]> <html id="ie6" <?php language_attributes(); ?>> <![endif]--> <!--[if IE 7]> <html id="ie7" <?php language_attributes(); ?>> <![endif]--> <!--[if IE 8]> <html id="ie8" <?php language_attributes(); ?>> <![endif]--> <!--[if !(IE 6) | !(IE 7) | !(IE 8) ]><!--> <html <?php language_attributes(); ?>> <!--<![endif]--> <head> <meta charset="<?php bloginfo( 'charset' ); ?>" /> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width" /> <title><?php /* * Print the <title> tag based on what is being viewed. */ global $page, $paged; wp_title( '|', true, 'right' ); // Add the blog name. bloginfo( 'name' ); // Add the blog description for the home/front page. $site_description = get_bloginfo( 'description', 'display' ); if ( $site_description && ( is_home() || is_front_page() ) ) echo " | $site_description"; // Add a page number if necessary: if ( $paged >= 2 || $page >= 2 ) echo ' | ' . sprintf( __( 'Page %s', 'twentyeleven' ), max( $paged, $page ) ); ?></title> <link rel="profile" href="http://gmpg.org/xfn/11" /> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="all" href="<?php bloginfo( 'stylesheet_url' ); ?>" /> <link rel="pingback" href="<?php bloginfo( 'pingback_url' ); ?>" /> <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="<?php echo get_template_directory_uri(); ?>/js/html5.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <![endif]--> <?php /* We add some JavaScript to pages with the comment form * to support sites with threaded comments (when in use). */ if ( is_singular() && get_option( 'thread_comments' ) ) wp_enqueue_script( 'comment-reply' ); /* Always have wp_head() just before the closing </head> * tag of your theme, or you will break many plugins, which * generally use this hook to add elements to <head> such * as styles, scripts, and meta tags. */ wp_head(); ?> </head> <body <?php body_class(); ?>> <div id="page" class="hfeed"> <header id="branding" role="banner"> <hgroup> <h1 id="site-title"><span><a>" title="<?php echo esc_attr( get_bloginfo( 'name', 'display' ) ); ?>" rel="home"><?php bloginfo( 'name' ); ?></a></span></h1> <h2 id="site-description"><?php bloginfo( 'description' ); ?></h2> </hgroup> <?php // Check to see if the header image has been removed $header_image = get_header_image(); if ( $header_image ) : // Compatibility with versions of WordPress prior to 3.4. if ( function_exists( 'get_custom_header' ) ) { // We need to figure out what the minimum width should be for our featured image. // This result would be the suggested width if the theme were to implement flexible widths. $header_image_width = get_theme_support( 'custom-header', 'width' ); } else { $header_image_width = HEADER_IMAGE_WIDTH; } ?> <a>"> <?php // The header image // Check if this is a post or page, if it has a thumbnail, and if it's a big one if ( is_singular() && has_post_thumbnail( $post->ID ) && ( /* $src, $width, $height */ $image = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id( $post->ID ), array( $header_image_width, $header_image_width ) ) ) && $image[1] >= $header_image_width ) : // Houston, we have a new header image! echo get_the_post_thumbnail( $post->ID, 'post-thumbnail' ); else : // Compatibility with versions of WordPress prior to 3.4. if ( function_exists( 'get_custom_header' ) ) { $header_image_width = get_custom_header()->width; $header_image_height = get_custom_header()->height; } else { $header_image_width = HEADER_IMAGE_WIDTH; $header_image_height = HEADER_IMAGE_HEIGHT; } ?> <img src="<?php header_image(); ?>" width="<?php echo $header_image_width; ?>" height="<?php echo $header_image_height; ?>" alt="" /> <?php endif; // end check for featured image or standard header ?> </a> <?php endif; // end check for removed header image ?> <?php // Has the text been hidden? if ( 'blank' == get_header_textcolor() ) : ?> <div class="only-search<?php if ( $header_image ) : ?> with-image<?php endif; ?>"> <?php get_search_form(); ?> </div> <?php else : ?> <?php get_search_form(); ?> <?php endif; ?> <nav id="access" role="navigation"> <h3 class="assistive-text"><?php _e( 'Main menu', 'twentyeleven' ); ?></h3> <?php /* Allow screen readers / text browsers to skip the navigation menu and get right to the good stuff. */ ?> <div class="skip-link"><a href="#content">"><?php _e( 'Skip to primary content', 'twentyeleven' ); ?></a></div> <div class="skip-link"><a href="#secondary">"><?php _e( 'Skip to secondary content', 'twentyeleven' ); ?></a></div> <?php /* Our navigation menu. Do I need put this copy of the header data in the functions.php file
No. You have to place a copy of the parent’s header.php file in the child theme.
Is it also necessary to create a style.css or can I just do what I’m doing with the functions.php?
Yes – all child themes need a style.css file. Have you reviewed child themes?
Ok I’ve created the style.css as follows, but now my website has gone blank.
@import url(“../twentyeleven/style.css”);
/*
Theme Name: Twenty Eleven Child
Theme URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/
Description: Child theme for the Twenty Eleven theme
Author: Admin
Author URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/about/
Template: twentyeleven
Version: 1.5
*/Do I copy the parent themes style.css information in before or after the Child theme information?
I must still be missing something as my site’s dashboard says that my child theme’s template is incomplete.
Do I copy the parent themes style.css information in before or after the Child theme information?
No. Initially your child theme’s style css file should only contain:
/* Theme Name: Twenty Eleven Child Theme URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/ Description: Child theme for the Twenty Eleven theme Author: Admin Author URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/about/ Template: twentyeleven Version: 1.5 */ @import url("../twentyeleven/style.css");
Ah I see. Thanks I’ve got that now and I’ve activated the child theme but I can’t have done the functions.php part correctly because it looks like this:
I’m sorry for the incessant questions, but I really don’t understand! With the Child theme activated, the only thing that changes on my site is a line of data from the functions.php file at the top of my page. How do I turn this into what I want it to be?
I now have 3 files in my Child theme:
style.css
header.php
functions.phpThe style.css looks exactly as you have posted above. The header.php contains an exact copy of the parent header.php file. And the functions.php looks like this:
function favicon_link() {
echo ‘<link rel=”http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CR-logo.jpg” type=”image/x-icon” href=”CR-logo.jpg” />’ . “\n”;
}
add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘favicon_link’ );What should I change now? Thanks for your patience in this matter.
