  • Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. First create a child theme for your changes. Or install a custom CSS plugin.

    Hi there, I followed the instructions and made a twentyeleven-child folder with a functions.php file inside. On the functions.php file I wrote this:
    function logo_link() {
    echo ‘<link rel=”http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CR-logo.jpg&#8221; type=”image/x-icon” href=”/CR-logo.jpg” />’ . “\n”;
    }
    add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘logo_link’ );

    but nothing has changed. What do I do now? Thanks!

    You need to create a custom copy of header.php in your child theme.

    I see. Do I need put this copy of the header data in the functions.php file I’ve already created or do I need to create a separate header.php file in the child theme as well?

    Also, when you say custom copy do you mean all of the following data, or just some of it?

    <?php
    /**
     * The Header for our theme.
     *
     * Displays all of the <head> section and everything up till <div id="main">
     *
     * @package WordPress
     * @subpackage Twenty_Eleven
     * @since Twenty Eleven 1.0

    Do I need put this copy of the header data in the functions.php file

    No. You have to place a copy of the parent’s header.php file in the child theme.

    Is it also necessary to create a style.css or can I just do what I’m doing with the functions.php?

    Yes – all child themes need a style.css file. Have you reviewed child themes?

    Thread Starter CRP

    (@crp)

    Ok I’ve created the style.css as follows, but now my website has gone blank.

    @import url(“../twentyeleven/style.css”);
    /*
    Theme Name: Twenty Eleven Child
    Theme URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/
    Description: Child theme for the Twenty Eleven theme
    Author: Admin
    Author URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/about/
    Template: twentyeleven
    Version: 1.5
    */

    Do I copy the parent themes style.css information in before or after the Child theme information?

    Thread Starter CRP

    (@crp)

    I must still be missing something as my site’s dashboard says that my child theme’s template is incomplete.

    Do I copy the parent themes style.css information in before or after the Child theme information?

    No. Initially your child theme’s style css file should only contain:

    /*
    Theme Name: Twenty Eleven Child
    Theme URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/
    Description: Child theme for the Twenty Eleven theme
    Author: Admin
    Author URI: http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/about/
    Template: twentyeleven
    Version: 1.5
    */

    @import url("../twentyeleven/style.css");
    Thread Starter CRP

    (@crp)

    Ah I see. Thanks I’ve got that now and I’ve activated the child theme but I can’t have done the functions.php part correctly because it looks like this:

    http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/

    Thread Starter CRP

    (@crp)

    I’m sorry for the incessant questions, but I really don’t understand! With the Child theme activated, the only thing that changes on my site is a line of data from the functions.php file at the top of my page. How do I turn this into what I want it to be?

    I now have 3 files in my Child theme:
    style.css
    header.php
    functions.php

    The style.css looks exactly as you have posted above. The header.php contains an exact copy of the parent header.php file. And the functions.php looks like this:

    function favicon_link() {
    echo ‘<link rel=”http://www.communityrendezvous.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/CR-logo.jpg&#8221; type=”image/x-icon” href=”CR-logo.jpg” />’ . “\n”;
    }
    add_action( ‘wp_head’, ‘favicon_link’ );

    What should I change now? Thanks for your patience in this matter.
