[resolved] replacing a photo & keeping description and comments (6 posts)

    Hello!

How a user can replace a photo (e.g., after correction) and keep its description and comments? On the 'edit photo' page one can rotate the photo left and right but can not replace it with an improved version, or I am missing something. Is it a way to do this without using FTP?

    Regards,
    MM

You can only Update a photo in the way of renewing it from a new image file by ftp-ing it to the depot directory and import it with the update chackbox checked. There is also the restriction that the filename of the new image file must be exactly equal to the existing photo name.

To make it simpler would have a lot of side effects / implications.
If an image has been moderated, and it would be easy to replace it, the whole idea of moderation would mean nothing. So, one needs to have ftp access and import rights to do this. That is a design decision.

Thank you for the explanation. Now I see why this feature is not available. Please allow me a few words of polemics.

Right, capability of easy replacing a moderated image means moderation is useless... if you leave its 'Publish' status unchanged. If you treat the new image during replacement as NEW then you can change the status to 'Pending' thus moderation still works and the user (photo owner) cannot bypass moderation by replacing the image. This is needed (status change) only if the moderation is enabled in Table VII B4. Note that if moderation is disabled there is no moderation problem ;-) The same in case the admin wants to replace a moderated image, admin cannot moderate himself so the problem does not exist also.

    Best regards,
    MM

It would become too complex in my eyes. Sending a new moderaion request email etc. If uploaders can edit photos ( Table VII-B5 ) they can copy-paste the description to a newly upload and delete the old one in these - i suppose rarely needed - situations. I will not change the updatebility of photos for now.

That's ok, thank you for the consideration. Just to close the topic I would like to explain that this rarely needed situation occurs when we have a photo album of objects (e.g. oil paintings, heirlooms). Comments below a photo refer to an object, not to the specific photo as such. After we get a better quality photo we want to replace the old one with the new one leaving all the comments below, thus deletion is not an option. We'll try to love FTP for now :-)

    Best regards,
    MM
