Rename directory following WP instructions and site disappears (2 posts)

I recently tried to rename the directory that WP is installed in. I followed WP directions: change settings in dashboard to new URL and then rename directory in FTP.

After this, I went back to the home page of my site and it was completely blank. The dashboard still works (using the renamed directory).

This message is displayed: "HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request." I cleared Chrome's cache and tried to access the site on FireFox and that didn't change anything.

Following these same instructions to change it BACK to the original name, I was able to fix the problem. But I still need to rename the directory and actually have my site display correctly. Any suggestions for how to go about this?

If it matters, my index page is located out of the directory (ie, mysite.com). My blog/WP install is located in a directory (ie, mysite.com/photography).

Let me clarify how I tried to follow WP's directions explained in the Codex:

In Settings > General, I changed the "WordPress address (URI):" from mysite.com/olddirectory to mysite.com/NEWdirectory.

I left "Blog address (URI):" alone, as it was mysite.com already. This is where the index page is, but the content is all under the directory.

Then I renamed the directory folder (olddirectory > NEWdirectory) in FTP.
