[resolved] Removing User Profile Website (8 posts)

    Is it possible to remove elements of the user profile?

    When users add comments, their name becomes a link to an external website if they have added a website to their user profile.

    I've found several posts about adding details to user profiles, but what I want to do is remove the "Website" entry on user profiles so that it is no longer there, or is no longer able to be entered, or doesn't show.

    Is this possible, and if so how?

    Also, if it involves changing the WordPress Code, would I need to change it again every time WP is updated, or is there a way of doing it once only?

    The reason for this request: I'm using the 'Recent Comments' widget, and instead of users clicking on the link to the comment, more often than not they are clicking on the link to the user because that's the first link. This takes users off my site and to the users site.

    read this similar thread on erase url in comment form

    you only need changing your theme and not the core file. It means you don't have to worry about WP update.

    The reason for this request: I'm using the 'Recent Comments' widget, and instead of users clicking on the link to the comment, more often than not they are clicking on the link to the user because that's the first link. This takes users off my site and to the users site.

    according to my experience it's better to let it be. give them a little bit of love, then the reader will love you more. More over, you can create community of reader rather then mere a blog.

    Thanks for your reply.

    I've looked at the other post. Presumably this deletes the requirement for an 'url' when someone leaves a comment, but this isn't what I want.

    What I want, is to remove the 'url' from user profile.

    If you look at http://beliefaith.com/hindu-right-to-cremation-in-uk/ you'll see what I mean.

    Peter Goble has left a comment, but his name is a link to his own website, and that's what I'm trying to avoid.

    Incidentally, I did what you suggested on the other post and changed the comments.php file. I found input type="text" name="url" id="url" and changed it to input type="hidden" name="url" id="url" BUT it didn't get rid of the URL label. I found out I could get rid of the whole thing by commenting out the paragraph the above code was in by placing <!-- before the <p> , and --> after the </p>.

    Any additional help on removing the URL from user profile would be gratefully appreciated.

    Well I'm still trying.

    It seems I need to change one of the WP core files rather than one of the template files, but I've tried all the ones starting 'users.' but without success.

    If you're reading this for the first time:

    What I'm trying to do is remove the 'Website' entry when a user registers. I'm talking about 'registration' not leaving 'comments'.

    When someone registers, there's a non-required question asking people who are registering to add their website address. This is what I'm trying to remove or comment out.

    Any help gratefully received.

    /wp-admin/users-new.php
    look for

    <th scope="row"><label for="url"><?php _e('Website') ?></label></th>

    Thanks for your replies above. That's what I was looking for. Thanks.

    It's not a duplicate.

    This post is about moving the URL from the registration page, by editing the users-new.php file in the WP core files.

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/369221?replies=11 is about moving the URL from the comments page and editing the comments.php file in the theme files.

    Hi technonow, I'm looking for the exact same thing. I want to remove user profile website but I don't want to modify core files in the admin folder and I want to still allow the visitors to submit their website when they comment.

    So the only solution is to find a way to remove user profile website using this code:

    <?php
    add_filter('user_contactmethods','hide_profile_fields',10,1);

    function hide_profile_fields( $contactmethods ) {
    unset($contactmethods['aim']);
    unset($contactmethods['jabber']);
    unset($contactmethods['yim']);
    return $contactmethods;
    }
    ?>

    I tried to remove ['url'] but it doesn't work...

    Thanks for your help! :)
