    I am trying to remove the search box on my site, and am only finding old forum posts, which don't seem to explain how to remove it in version 3.4.2 - can anyone help, please?

  2. The first thing you will need to do is make a child theme - Codex: Child theme

    Then once you have your child theme in place, the easiest thing to do would be to hide the div using css. So you would had this to your child theme css :

    #searchform {
    display:none;
    }

    If you have Jetpack installed, you can skip the child theme part and just add that as custom css.

    I should have said in my original question that I'm not a techy person at all. I just want to get my site up and running without the search bar. I'm afraid I have no idea what a child theme is or was a css is - I'm managing to get the site looking how I want, but this is clearly taking me into a world I don't understand!

    Could anyone give me an answer in English, rather than in geek? (Thanks Christine for your answer, by the way, I just don't understand it!)

    If a theme doesn't support the modifications you wish to make, you will have to get technical and create code to do what you want. Sometimes you can find plugins that do what you want and therefore avoid technicalities.
