Support » Installing WordPress » removing database

  • I messed up my blog somehow so that I can’t change anything or even access the admin page anymore. I am trying to start over again. I have deleted EVERYTHING wordpress related that I can find on my server and uploaded again. Install then tells me that I have already installed and have to delete my database to re-install. If deleting everything from the server doesn’t do that, what does?

  • Just deleting the source code doesn’t delete the database. Also, the only way a completely new WP would know of an existing database if if you entered that info when configuring it…at least that’s my experience. But, it seems several people are reporting this problem, so maybe there is something strange going on that I’m just not understanding. I’ve installed and upgraded WP literally hundreds of times and haven’t seen this problem.

Well then what does delete the database? It tell me that I need to do that, but I can’t find anywhere how to do that.

I have to use the database name given me by my host, so I have to enter the same info for the new install as the old.

Do I need to have the host delete the database?

No, if you can’t create databases and your host gives you databases, then you probably just need to drop the tables in the database and use it again. Do you have access to your database with something like phpMyAdmin so you can drop the tables?

If not, then try using the same database info in your config.php file and change the table prefix…this should let you create a new set of tables in the same database for the new install.

    Thanks,
Changing the table prefix worked. I have been trying to figure this out since August.
