    This is a line from the Kubrick sidebar.php – can you tell me how to remove the h2 tag without messing with the command to make pages list (called 'Resesearch) in order that I want. Sorry if this is a really foolish question. Thanks in advance.

    <?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&title_li=<h2>' . __('Research') . '</h2>' ); ?>

    That's not CSS, it's HTML.
    Examples of using the template tag: Template_Tags/wp_list_pages
