How do I remove this annoying WPMU DEV spam from my dashboard?
It says:
Please install the latest version of our free Update Notifications plugin which helps you stay up-to-date with the most stable, secure versions of WPMU DEV themes and plugins. More information »
I have no idea to what it is referring or how it got there ( I don't think I have a plug-in called Update Notifications) but I would like it to go away.
Any help would be appreciated.

This appears as a result of you installing a plugin from the wpmudev site. I'd guess it is the Google +1 plugin by Ve Bailovity (Incsub). Here are 2 ways of removing that obnoxious message:
1) Edit the plugin php code, explained here: http://ganbox.com/blog/google-1-бутон-и-досадно-съобщение/
2) Install another plugin to suppress the message, explained here: http://www.studionashvegas.com/plugins/wpmu-dev-error-message-removal-plugin/
