Remove text background color | WordPress.org

I know this is ridiculously easy, but I can’t for the life of me find out how to remove the background color from my behind the menu text!

I changed the color of the hover text here:
.main-navigation li:hover > a
and the text background color appeared (in white) and WON’T go away.

I am working in a child theme for the stylesheet and have recently updated to the most recent theme. My site for reference is http://www.theartillery.us

put this code in custom.css

background-color: transparent;
}
```
