   After upgrading to 3.3.1, I still have found no way to remove photos from a gallery without deleting them and having to reupload them. I feel like this should have been introduced versions ago.

   How about either a remove from gallery button in the media insert box or an option to "detach" the media from the page within the media library?

   you can try this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/file-un-attach/ it works with custom post types also
