Remove password protection from site (4 posts)

    Hiya.

I've made my first WordPress site (I used to use Dreamweaver, but wanted to try a CMS), and last night I switched it over from a http://www.mysite.com/wordpress directory to the root. I ran into some trouble doing that so who knows what I may have screwed up along the way.

The site in question is http://www.wildlilyranch.com/

The problem I have at the moment is that the site is asking for a password/id to enter. At one point I did have the wordpress directory protected (I believe I did this via the GoDaddy control panel). I'm not sure where the password protection is now coming from. When I view the pages in the dashboard they are marked to "public" so I'm not sure what to check next.

Help? P.S. I'm new at this and not an advanced web designer, so dumbing it down when you reply would be much appreciated. :-P

You will find that password protect in .htaccess file

Thanks! It seems to now be fixed by changing the .htaccess file (I actually reset it).

Here I'm going to fill in a little info should anyone else new to this run into the same question.

    • I noticed the .htaccess file is hidden in FTP, so changed a setting in my FTP app to show hidden files/show files beginning with a period.
    • I opened the file in Notepad and realized I had no idea what to edit, so I googled. One option is to reset your .htaccess file by creating a new blank one in Notepad and uploading it to your server.
    • Back it up first, of course. I'm sure there are cases when it would be unwise to reset it, but in this scenario, it worked.

    Thanks again, :-)
