Hi Paul,
please have a look in the “footnote.html” file located in “wp-content\plugins\footnotes\templates\”.
There you can find the “)” and remove or replace it with any character you want.
Thanks for your request.
No problem. You are welcome.
I will mark your request as solved.
Thanks! I had this problem as well. Could we perhaps get some way to customize this in the future? I’d like to have my footnotes display as [1], rather than 1) . I dont’ want to have to edit the template file every time the plugin is updated. Thanks!
Hy. Of course, there will be a Update in the future to customize the layout of the foototes.
You can check out our GitHub page for any feature and bug requests.

This is exactly what I was wondering about. I love the plugin, but yes, I’d like to be able to ditch the “)” and use either nothing at all or [1] without editing core files, etc. Great idea for a new feature/option!
Wow, you already added this feature! Thank you!! 🙂 LOVE this plugin. Love it love it love it.
Just for anyone who’s also curious how to do this:
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
- Hover over “Settings” and click “footnotes”.
- Click the “Customize” tab at the top.
- The box at the top says “Superscript layout”. Type in whatever you want to display before the footnote’s number (or leave blank), then whatever you want to display after the footnote’s number (or leave blank).
- Click “Save changes” at the bottom of the page.
This changes what’s displayed before and after the superscript numbers when you insert footnotes.
Thanks for the guide.
In further release versions we want to implement a quick quideline through the settings to tell the user what he can change and where the settings are located to make it easy to find them.
We also think about regroup the settings for better reading.
