• My host, Namesco, took down my site because of an erroneous directory that appeared. Not helpful at all. Those issues are sorted, but WP is posing a problem. I have a backup from December 2010, so I though I could just reinstall WP from their Softaculous 1 click installer. Not so. Namesco’s support team have been attentive and kindly reinstalled WP on my behalf, into a different directory. This gave a basic installation of WP. To make my hair greyer, the server kept timing out when I attempted to import the backup into my database, so Namesco kindly uploaded it. I can see from the files and their dates that this has been done. Unfortunately I only get a white screen – nothing else. What has gone wrong?

I would add that the backup has a different name to that of the current database in use, does that have anything to do with it?

    Hoping someone can help.

  • What you have described offers lots of possibilities for problems.

The best place to start is to restore both the WordPress database and the WordPress file structure from the same “moment in time”, presumably December 2010, in your situation. That ensures that everything matches, most notably the version of WordPress.

If you restore to a different URL than where WordPress was originally installed at the time of your backup, then you will need to make some changes. That is detailed here:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress#If_you_forget_to_change_the_locations

Restoring to a different database name, requires changes to wp-config.php, described here:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php

And your problems reloading the database yourself can be solved with BIGDUMP. Best to learn how to use it as you might need to do a restore in a future disaster faster than your web host will be able to help you. Here is where to get BIGDUMP:
