    If you make it mandatory to register in order to be able to comment – then you have to provide a “Register” link.

    I see that now. I don’t want visitors to automatically be taken to the dashboard after logging in.

    Then don’t require registering and you are fine. I, for one, never register, rather keep my comments for myself because I consider it a waste of my time.

    So you don’t look to gather info about those visiting the site?

    Even not registering you can get their name and email (mandatory) on most of the blogs, WP shows their IP adress – and optionally you get their URL.
    What else do you get if they register?

    If I don’t require them to register I don’t see WP getting their email address. Am I missing something?

    admin panel >Options > Discussion > check the box where it says –
    Before a comment appears:
    Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
