Referrer Spam - A little scared. (7 posts)

I run several WordPress blogs - one of them, I've got a big problem with referrer spamming on them. Curiously, this doesn't affect any of my other blogs, and the referrers list is as clean as a whistle.

The referrer spam is literally garbage links which don't have any kind of link back to my website at all. I've read ways of getting rid of them, but they don't seem to shift. Anything manual seems a lot of work - there are hundreds of them per day.

At first I wasn't bothered, but somewhere I read that you can get a search engine penalty if these spam sites are detected on your site, almost by way of association.

I've had a look at my logs in wp-content but there is only something called 'Apache Logs'. Can't find anything in there though. Someone did mention writing something into .htaccess to block any site where the referrer does not equal the URL but I don't know how to do it.

Does anyone else have this problem and how do you get rid of it?

I should add this isn't comment spam, this is easy to prevent from appearing on the site, I have no control over the referrer spam though.

Uncheck "Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)" in Settings -> Discussion.

    Hey thanks for reply.

These links aren't pingbacks or trackbacks - the majority of which I have (admittedly few) are genuine.

I'll give an example of one:

    hxxp://www.diagnostyka-klimatyzacji5.turek.pl/455/rekawice-robocze/
    hxxp://www.portaldelescritor.es/phpBB2/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=432184

Usually nonsense, foreign language websites that have no links or connections to mine, yet show up in the 'Last Referrers' bit of Statpress on a regular basis.

    Don't worry about them.

    Well, I can't help it.

The vast majority of referrers on that site are fraudulent; surely this is a waste of resources?

There is absolutely nothing you can do about it. It will not harm your SEO.
