Reducing levels of comments thread

I have a blog with 10 levels of threaded comments. I want to reduce it to 3. But I want to know what would happen to my existing comments if I do so? Will the comments threaded to more than 3 would be deleted or hidden or become at 0 level?

Any guidance on this would be very helpful for me.

I’ve just tested this on a development site, and all comments at the deeper levels are moved up to the new deepest allowable level.

If you then set it back to allowing more levels, they all go back to their original levels.

I’ve only done a very quick test on one post – I’d highly recommend backing up your database before you change the setting!
