Redirection not working without html or php extention

    I noticed that if the old url is /returns-policy.html (with a html or php ) on the end of it. the redirection works to a WP page like /returns-policy/

    however if it is a /shop/gifts/ without a .html or .php page ( I guess this is a category)then it won’t redirect to anything but goes to a 404 page

    Even tried /shop/gifts/(.*) and ^/shop/gifts/(.*) which was suggested in the plugin site.

    Any ideas as to why this wont work?
