Redirect Category pages? (2 posts)

So we're finally ready to make the jump from exclusively using categories, to using tags in their place.

Have others made this change, and if so, how did you handle redirecting category pages to tag pages?

Obvious, with 301s, I get that part, but what did you actually decide to do?

We're eliminating a majority of the categories, and will be redirecting them to the equivalent tag page. When you guys did that, did you redirect all of the categories to tag pages? Or did you not think of it?

Does WordPress redirect traffic to a category page automatically, if the category no longer exists?

Using the Redirection plugin (http://urbangiraffe.com/plugins/redirection/), I was able to automate this (after spending a day wondering what happened to all our traffic).

A redirect in the plugin from '/category/(.*)' to '/tag/$1' is all it took, and didn't break the remaining categories.
