if you're familiar with the orange envelope system that reddit has, that's what I'm looking for: a method to see who's directly replied to your comments in a threaded comment setup.
is there anything like this already written?

well, that's threaded comments, yes, that's what wordpress comes with now. I already have it installed and working fine.
that's not what I'm looking for though. Right now, I'm using a comment notification plugin that sends an email out whenever someone comments on a post that you're subscribed to, this is it:

what I'm looking for is something that's a bit more fine tuned and only notifies you when someone replies directly to you in the threaded comments
