I built a localhost site on a Mac using MAMP. The computer used for this died but fortunately I still have a back up of all the files. Since then, I bought a new computer and I'm hoping I could continue working on the site where I left it off. The question is how would go about connecting my new MAMP install on my new computer to this existing website without loosing any of the progress I made so far?
Any help is very much appreciated.

It should be an easy task to create a new database and database user with the same name as the old one, import your old database backup to the new database, and place your backup WordPress files in the identical location on your new computer. That should pretty much be it. What you basically need to do is recreate the path to your WordPress files, your database, the database user, and then make sure your files get placed in the same directory structure they were in on the old machine.
