Recommendations on WP Windows Installation (3 posts)

I have to install WP on a Windows 2K or 2K3 server. They want to keep IIS also. This machine would only be running WP so I only need what WP needs (and phpMyAdmin).

I was looking at a package like XAMPP. It seems all PHP/MySQL installation kits, i.e. XAMPP and WAMP come with Apache. Can I still use IIS or are there other kits that don't include Apache?

Are there any advantages/disadvantages to running IIS (I know I will have to hack the mod rewrite stuff, are there additional features the IT staff will want to keep from IIS).

Any other advice for a programmer who does not have experience with server setups and admin would be appreciated.

If you have to have IIS running ie want Outlook Web Access, then i would use IIS... various howto's are available on the net for setting this up:-

I havn't added mod rewrite and don't have a problem with permalink... so havn't seen the need to hack mod rewrite - as long as you use the correct format for your permalink (easily set-up in the admin panel) it works just fine for me? can someone correct me?

  3. I would strongly recommend against running IIs and I would strongly recommend that you run an Apache distribution, like XAMPP. If you do choose to do so, follow this guide: http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/xampp/
