Recommendations for a User/Membership Plugin for managing downloads? (6 posts)

Here's what I'm looking for. I'm trying to create a membership site that:

    • Lets users select items they want to purchase from a "Store" page (or similar)
    • Makes the item available as a digital download (i.e. presents a download link)
    • Creates an account for the User, where the user-table stores the different products they have already bought. This way, if the download is interrupted, or if they lose those volatile digital files in a HDD crash, they can always download the files again.

Can anyone recommend a good membership plugin that could be configured to do this?

I'm not necessarily looking for a cookie-cutter, cut-and-paste, help-me-because-I'm-too-lazy-to-figure-out-how-this-works solution here; I am completely willing to learn, to experiment, and generally to make sure I don't wear out my welcome with knowledgable volunteer help :-)

That said, I would appreciate it even if someone just directed me to an internet article about "choosing a membership plugin that does x, y, and z", or "configuring x-plugin to do y", if the resource is applicable. Even a recommendation for a book would be nice...
At the bare minimum, I just require a starting push in the right direction.

Can't wait to see what fellow users come up with...
    Thanks in advance, guys!

    Hiya!

I don't think you actually need a Membership plugin.

MarketPress will do what you ask very nicely out of the box:

However, if you do want an extensive membership plugin as well, the appropriately titled Membership plugin should do ya:

..and here are a couple of articles that show what it's capable of:

Hmm, thanks WPMU Dev. I'll have to check out those plugins!

Just by looking quickly at the MarketPress plugin, it looks great. However, just as a nit-picking correction, you should have said the premium version of MarketPress will work out of the box...

See, my OP said I'm offering digital products. I would have to upgrade to the Premium version before having this option available.

Needless to say, I might actually go for that premium plugin, if it will meet my production needs. Like I said, I'll have to check them out, and see if they make sense for this application.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Nope, we just recently added digital downloads to the free version :)

    Oh! That's really cool.

Just be sure to update the WP Plugins repository page for MarketPress, because it still lists digital products as one of the "Pro" features offered in the full version.

That's what was throwing me off, so just to give you a heads up...

But, anyway, I will definitely be checking out MarketPress. If it really works well, I will more than likely upgrade to the full version. It looks like a great plugin solution!

Hmm that's weird, where are you seeing that?

I see this on the .org page: http://screencast.com/t/nhhcnuUaA77
