so i've googled mercilessly and can't find a solve that i understand how to implement.

i'm doing a magazine-style format (mimbo) with this type of layout:

lead article (most recent post, big main area)
sub-column 1: current (2nd-6th most recent posts, from all categories)
sub-column 2: recent (section for each of 5 categories, most recent article from each)

the base functionality works, but i'd like to have it so that the articles in column 2 don't duplicate any of the 'current' articles.

essentially, how can i make it so the last loop skips over the 6 most recent posts, regardless of category?

in the standard theme code, the third loop just does:
    query_post('showpost=1&cat=$category')
    for an array of categories.

And what did you find when looking at the "offset" parameter of the query_posts?
    Template_Tags/query_posts
