Really slow loading when trying to get rid of spam

When I am trying to get of spam comments or basically anything to do with comments my wordpress slows right down with loading, often only marks some of the comments as spam and also will log me out – basically I stops working very well. The rest of my wordpress is fine – any suggestions?
