    HI all,
Ok I am a basic freelance web designer but without db or php knowledge. I just spent the last hour installing wordpress and now have it going. There is loads of interesting and useful info here on this site but it's really technical and 'insider' based. But maybe I'm missing some intriduction links etc.
I want my blog to appear differently than the default... but how ?
I see talk of templates and styles and stuff but what are they ? What is the difference between a Template and a Style and a Layout ?
If I go to the Designs/Layouts/Themes list..... what does this mean ? if I see a layout I like can I duplicate it ? how ? I don't see any file called template in my file lists...?

Site design is a combination of the structure of your index.php and wp-layout.css files. Other files can be involved, like wp-comments.php but the first two are principally it.
I know nothing about PHP and I've successfully done several site designs. Also, this forum holds a wide cross-section of skills and experience, and to classify it as an "insider" and "technical" forum is incorrect. If you call explaining how things work as being "technical", then I guess we have differing opinions.
If you are using version 1.2.2, then don't worry about templates, because that functionality doesn't exist.

This link will give you many ideas about the possibilities of design and by dissecting the work, you'll quickly be up to speed.
