• Hey all, this is the 5th time in as many weeks that my site Substitutesam.com has gone down with a 500 server error. Everytime I contact Hostgator support they fix the issue but cannot explain to me why it’s happening or how to fix it.

I’ve read through a few other posts on this issue but cannot seem to figure it out (I’m a true novice in terms of changing files and coding in general as you can probably tell).

I’d really like to get to the bottom of this as it usually takes about 45 minutes per phone call or chat with Hostgator to have it back up and running. Anyone who’s able to help a less savvy individual is MUCH appreciated!

  • So what does Hostgator tell you when you talk to them? Is this an issue with your site or with Hostgator? My company has quit using Hostgator due to their recent instability.

Update: Hostgator says there is something going on in the htcaccess file and mentioned “GoMobi” as a reason for the error?

My contract is up in May and I was unaware of any stability. What is going on with Hostgator and how difficult is it to switch hosts?

I too am having the same problem but with UK2. if there is a solution I would lobve to find it. Its driving me nuts!

Hostgator moved data centers last fall and our sites went totally down twice over a couple of weeks and then they suspended our account because of a very popular seo plugin we were using that they thought was using to many resources. I heard they had been bought out by another company. We moved about 160 sites with maybe 50% being WordPress and we did it in a day. Just moving one site is quite easy. I can do it in under 15 minutes.

Have you Googled 500 server error with GoMobi?

    @jwiere03,

My first instinct is always to Google and YouTube search for a solution, unfortunately for this instance the solution doesn’t appear to be within my skillset…

The site has crashed again today and it seems to happen anytime I make a change to my plugins, which is REALLY frustrating. I’m going to contact Hostgator again and spend an hour getting it up without a permanent solution so if anyone knows how to explain a fix to this to a five year old please respond! 🙂

Are there specific plugins that we’re aware of may be causing the issue? Here’s an email response from the HostGator Rep:

We found some bad code in your .htaccess file that was causing this issue. We had to clear your .htaccess file and replace it with a normal basic WordPress set of rules. Once this was done your site started loading normally again.

Please let us know if we can help you with anything else.

    Thank you,

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting HostGator. Currently the only rules in the .htaccess file are the default WordPress rewrites. If you add and activate plugins in WordPress or add services like gomobi, or create rewrites the .htaccess file will be modified. It could be possible that any of those items could cause the error to come back. We would need to know what the last thing you did before the 500 errors happened to be able to figure out what caused the changes to break the .htaccess.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to assist.

    Cheers,

I get the same error (500…) when I turn my server from PHP 5.2 to PHP 5.3…

The reason I am doing this is because the widget I need only runs on 5.3!

Any ideas? I’ve asked my host (iPower) but no luck as yet…

    Just got thi from ipower

    Hello Andrew,

I have set the PHP version 5.3 for your account and reset the php.ini file at http://www.ipower.com/controlpanel/cgiManagement/PHPplus.bml . Now, the website http://thewisdomproject.com.au works fine without any error.

hope that helps you guys, I have no idea what it means but it worked

    Hey Andyzoot,

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately it’s still happening. Today it happened again immediately after I updated my plugins on wordpress. I’m on the phone with Hostgator for going on an hour and they still haven’t found it… (not sure why they don’t have notes from the previous 10 times I’ve called).

This makes me think it might be somewhere in my rewrite code?

    update:
I seemed to have cured my error 500!
Our site has stayed up ever since….been 7 days now.
I simply made the htaccess file read only.
Wordpress in our instance was rewriting the file after a few hours. Hope this may help someone as I know how frustrating this is.

The problem could also be your memory limit! Here are written instructions with a video on how to increase it. I hope this helps someone! How to increase memory Limit in wp-congif.php file

I have the same problem. Please help. My site is on the Yahoo
