After using autofocus-theme on 3.1.3 everything got coorupted and I can't get into the dashboard anymore, nor have I backed the blog up properly. Is there a way to re-install wp, replacing the current corrupted installation through ftp-upload? Is it also possible to save the posts and images as long as I can fetch them through FTP? The theme, plugins and widgets are unimportant.

Log in using ftp and rename autofocus theme to say autofocus_hold and then try log in and default twenty ten theme will open and let you log in admin panel

The theme is already set to twenty ten, but during this process it went wrong.
All your posts and pages are saved on database. As long as you create backup of your database you will save your post and pages.
You can replace all files and folders if you like just do not replace wp-content folder and wp-config.php file

But will it be possible to re-install 3.1.3 even if it's that version that is already installed on my server? Do I just download and unzip 3.1.3 and upload it except wp-content and wp-config.php?

Thanks a lot for your help. I do not have time available for doing the changes within the next days, but now I know how to do it thanks to you. I'll let you know about the success :-)

Hm. Vell, as I feared it didn't really work. At first the blog wouldn't load at all, but half luckyly it shows up now along with the corruptions. I hav eexported the databases from the server and I have downloaded the whole wp-folder too, with all it's content. And now I wonder if its possible to delete it all, install it anew and upload the contentfolder, wp-config.php and the databases?
looks like you have plugin that is causing the problem using ftp browse to wp-content/plugins folder in plugins folder rename this folder image-widget folder to say image-widget-hold and see if this clears the problem

Wow. This was the right medicine. But all image-headers in the dashboard are replaced by text. How do I clean it all up - both on the server and within the dashboard? By the way; do you wish to receive one of my digital artpieces or one of my nature-photos in high resolution as a grateful gest from me?

There are also a problem when you navigate the blog through the archive. If you choose one month, the posts listet are filled with coding instead of images. The images are getting nice if you click further to each post.
What theme are you using switch to default twenty ten theme and see if you still have same problem

I've switched to twenty-ten some time ago, some time after the trouble begun.
But I checked the plugins from inside the dashboard. There was a deactivated image-widget there. I deleteded it, and now everything seems to be all right. The folder I renamed "image-widget-hold" has dissapered, and that should be a good status - shouldn't it?
Now I will install wordpress on a different server and run a twin-blog there, import all the posts and try out new plugins, themes and widgets there before I do it on my main server.
And again, if I can help you back I'm more than eager to help. Perhaps you need any logo or any other imagery. Just ask. You might visit my artsite to see what I make: magnemyhren.no
Thank you again for all help :-D
When you renamed the image-widget plugin what you did was deactivate the plugin so gald to know that all working for you.

It is working all right as long as I don't install any lightbox-widget. Could it be a java-problem?

I thought that everything was alright now, buit when I click on the media-tab in the dashboard there appears an odd cod-string at the top of the dashboard instead of the dashboard-heading. I copyed it and here it is:

You have a faulty plugin. Try installing the Hotfix plugin:

It seems like it's not only faulty plugins on my site - too bad. The whole blog installation seems unstable. Because of that I have created a new development/twin blog at a new domain to use for backup and to develop my site safely magnemyhren.com. At this site I have uploaded all the posts and comments from an export file from the main-blog magnemyhren.no/WP/. At magnemyhren.com I installed the carrington-theme - which I felt in love with, and I tried to do that also at magnemyhren.no/WP/, but the result was that the dashboard again got full of odd codings. I managed to change back to Twenty-ten again, so the blog works, but I learned that the blog has some main problems.
Is it possible to use the freshly installed folder-structure at magnemyhren.com to replace the unstable ones at magnemyhren.no/WP/ , except for the config file, of course?

In addition I suspect there are some trouble with the php-coding/structure (or whatever it is called) because I cannot manage to export the databese from magnemyhren.no/WP/ like I did before or like I can do with magnemyhren.com
Have you tried:
- deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
- switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.
- resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

Thank you for beeing there :-)
I've done the two first options you listed here, but not the third.
Perhaps the following is important:
I looked into the php-admin panel for the database, and i saw there were far more databases than the 11 "starters" (forgive my bad subject-vocabular) There were for instance some listed there that belongs to plugins I have tested a long time ago, wich is no longer in use. Perhaps these should be deleted manually?
I wouldn't touch them for now. They shouldn't be creating any problems.

Should I clean up the content of the plugin-folder and delete the folders of plugins that are not listed in the dashboard? For instance there are two folders fancy-box and fancy gallery while there are only one installed fancy-box plugin.

I've now tried to do what you have told me to do - all three options. But the problem is still there. Now all the plugins are deactivated and even previewing another theme than twenty ten causes caution-messages and lists of codings.

The "painter"-theme seems to work all right. This is the theme I have used for a long period of time. Then I tested some other themes, for instance autofocus, and this is when the trouble seems to have started.
