   I built a website using wordpress on Wamp. I was well pleased with the result But along the way i had made many mistakes and changes. So I thought i would do a completley new build to lose all the errors etc that had crept in. I copied the whole of the build to an external Hard drive. I then tried a new install of WordPress on Wamp. I ban now access http://localhost but when i add wordpress i.e. http://localhost/wordpress I get the message:

   The website cannot display the page

   HTTP 500

   Most likely causes:
   •The website is under maintenance.
   •The website has a programming error.

   What you can try:

   Retype the address.

   Go back to the previous page.

   This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.
   For more information about HTTP errors, see Help.

   Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what is going on.

   Hello Brian,
   Why don't you:
   1. Install wamp using executable insallation file on pc hard-disk
   2. Delete everything on 'www'
   3. Keep wordpress files on 'www' not the 'wordpress' folder
   4. Create the database using phpmyadmin (http://localhost/phpmyadmin/
   5. http://localhost/wp-admin/install.php or just http://localhost/wp-admin/
   6. Provide required information about local site and database
   7. When wordpress installed successfully, try login using your username and password

   & My recommendation use xampp and uncheck
   1. Add apache to service
   2. Add mysql to service

   during installation if you wish to save memory:

   Shekhar,
   Many thaanks for your help.
   I found the fault that was the download i got from the web was corrrupt, i downloded another copy and that worked well.
   So had a quite sucessful day with the rebuild. But today Wamp will not work.
   So tried xampp, that wouldn't work either. looks as though there is a problem with Port 80, and I'm not techie enough to know how to get round that.
   I cannot see how I would work with wordpress on xampp either. So may have to give that a miss.

   Brian,
   Make sure u download installer version of xampp not on zip or 7zip format.

   The file name will be: xampp-win32-1.7.7-VC9-installer.exe (for windows, size 81mb)

   For further help. Its on their(apache friends) support page. Try there.
