In reading the preparations for updating to version 2.9.2, I’m a little stumped. The preparations include: (1) Checking the requirements with my host (2) Backing up my database (3) Disabling my plugins. I checked the requirements with my host and found that I am compatable, but the backup and plugins are causing me a little confusion. I must preface this with, I am not a techy person AT ALL and I am only creating this site myself so that I can write. I’m a writer, not a web developer in the least bit. With that said, I found a site that says I could just download a plugin that would easily allow me to backup my database and files. Yet, I see that I must deactivate all my plugins. My question is, since I am just starting my website and do not yet have content (as far as blog posts or anything written on there) do I still need to back it up? I want to be sure because I have had a developer create a personalized design for me and I wouldn’t want to lose any of that. So is a backup needed in that case? And if so, is there a fairly simple and easy way of doing it? And as far as deactivating the plugins, (I only have two so far) will I be able to reactivate them without having to reinstall them?….And if it is possible that I do NOT have to backup now since I don’t have written content on my page yet, will it be ok for me to download the backup plugin once I’ve upgraded to the latest version and begin to backup my things then. Hopefully my questions are clear. Please let me know. Thanks.

  • In general you may not need to worry about backups at this stage, but you really need to get conversant with backups. In particular you should be familiar with backup up your database which houses your posts/pages, and your content (or files) that is your themes/plugins, and uploads.

Thank you very much. I found an easy way to backup, just to be safe.
