I'm trying to add an extra sidebar between the menu and the container in a child twentyten theme.
I got it working by editing the main twentyten by following these excellent instructions:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/create-3-horizontal-boxes-between-menu-and-container?replies=16
Problem is that I want to do it a in child theme but can't seem to get the functions.php working.
How do I create a functions file with just the following changes:
    http://pastebin.com/SzqrfR1V

Here is the theme working with the twentyten

    thank you so much.

No! Never edit the parent theme.

Start with a blank text file called functions.php in your child theme and take it from there.

thanks Esmi, I know not to edit the main theme and I'm certainly not planning to leave it like that (hence this post). When I couldn't get the child to work, I tried to edit the parent to make sure that my code was right.

Start with a blank text file called functions.php in your child theme and take it from there.

Done that but it's the take it from there that I've been stuck on for many hours.
