I see many users were forced to increase memory amount to 64MB or even 128 to be able install and run WP 2.8. For the folks, who have their own server it's not a problem.

It's interesting how big this amount of memory is for shared hosting account where thousands of accounts reside on one server and does that mean that those, who are using shared hosting should stick with WP 2.7.1?

I believe it is hard to answer that question as you don't know what kind of plugins people are using. Also the memory required may differ based on the PHP version.

I host my websites at two companies: DowntownHost and SiteGround.

This answer is from DowntownHost technical support:

64 MB is not too much if a site is not too busy, however, 128 MB per PHP spawn is a bit too much for a shared host, probably the problem of the memory leak is generated by the plugins installed and not directly by WordPress.

I could not get answer from SiteGround, because they banned me from their forum... apparently they do not accept posts from unsatisfied clients :( ... it's time for a new host :)
