• Fist I am not sure if this is the right place, if not then sorry.

Hello, I have been working on a site, not much, really just meant for learning how to make websites. However a a friend and I had an idea about seeing if we could create a script to gather all the business in a given city off yelp. We also might use it on a future website one day.

Now all the information that we gather would ONLY BE name, categories, address, city, State, Country, phone number. Categories would be switched to our own categories so we are not using yelps categories at all.

So how legal is this? We are not sure because on one hand yes this is on yelps site and we are scraping it from them either by JavaScript (Works already) or using their API via PHP (Also works already). On the other hand all the info we are gathering is freely available information that we could get from just about anywhere else, just slower. I don’t think yelp can copyright the business information itself? They can copyright the way it looks on their site, the way it is represented, even the ordering of the information is copyrightable I think but not the business information itself?

Again all the information we would gather is name, categories, address, city, State, Country, phone number. Categories is the ONLY one I can think of that might be illegal to scrape, however if we did, we would auto rename them to our own categories so we are not just outright coping and using theirs which are probably copyrighted or something.

Thanks for any info, this is really important for us to know.
