Question about extending Custom Post Type (5 posts)

I do mainly development / FE but have just started working with WordPress and was hoping to confirm what I understand about custom post types.

I'm developing an ebook related site for a client and thought it might be a good time to build the site for WordPress, but I'm having some difficulty with creating posts with the features I need.

Essentially I'd like my client to create a post with

    • an image for the 'featured' section of the front page (the latest post would be rendered here)
    • an image for the 'previous editions' section of the front page (the 4 other most recent posts would be rendered in this section)
    • a different image for the single / more info page related to that ebook.

I also need to upload and associate 1-4 ebook formats with each post.

Do I need to make a separate post for the featured, previous, single pages for each product and then manually upload the ebook files and add them as custom fields?

Is there a straightforward way to simply create a custom post type with 3 featured images which I can specify within the theme as well as 1-4 ebooks which I can link to within the theme?

I apologize if I'm missing anything or if this is the wrong section, but any help is greatly appreciated. I am leaning towards just writing the code manually, but I was admittedly looking forward to letting wordpress save me some login/comments/posting development time.

The Pods CMS Framework plugin will let you create custom database tables and gives you the tools to retrieve and display the entries.

As of Pods 2.0, you can create custom post types with Pods and more. I bet it will fit your needs very nicely.
