Publicize sends wrong image to Facebook
-
For some time now (don’t know when it actually started), JetPack no longer sends the correct featured image (or any image from the post) to Facebook.
Here are two examples:https://www.facebook.com/CloudAve
https://www.facebook.com/EnterpriseIrregularsAll those posts that show a salesforce cloud are incorrectly displayed: the image does not come from the post, but from a side widget that’s displayed on the original blog. Note: all the posts have a proper image in the source, it just did not get sent.
Yet this is not a consistent behavior, as the links above show posts that display the correct iamge.

Here’s an example:
http://kvet.ch/post/remembering-grampa/
I have the Popular Posts active and set to Grid, and expect a post like that upon create with Promote set to grab an image from the grid of popular posts, in this case, something from Arrested Westeros 🙂
(If you suspect another add-on is the Root Cause, I can disable my pull quotes and footnotes for you, but I’m loathe to disable my caching and S3 media services.)
Hi! So I ran that page through the Facebook Debugger:
and it shows the right image being detected (http://media.kvet.ch/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/me-and-grampa.jpg). I also tried to share the post on FB and it showed the right image as well (I cancelled my post by the way, in case you’re wondering). Lastly, I looked at the source of the post to make sure that there was only one og:image meta tag, and as suspected, there was only one. So, it looks like it works right now!
Delightful news; once I have something interesting to say I’ll test it out. Thanks for the legwork — I’ve been skittish to try after the update to 3.6b3 this week.
Pleasure! If you have other issues, I’d suggest starting a new thread and linking to this one, since you don’t seem to be using the SEO plugin I mentioned, so it looks like it was a different issue.
I’m having the same problem, but not with all posts. Over the last 5, 3 had the wrong image (it used my site logo, don’t know why). How can I fix it?
Hi Loenardogsouza,
Without links to your site and the problem posts, I can’t tell you what the issue is. I suggest you start a new thread for your issue and include as much detail as possible. Thanks!
Hi Richard, thanks for your reply.
Yesterday I deleted all the wrong posts and added manually. Next time the error happens again I’ll be back here. thanks!Richard, it happened again.
Yesterday I left two posts scheduled to go online today and the Thumbnail that was sent to Facebook were my website logo. You can see it here both examples:

Thank you!
Can someone tell me how to FIX the jetpack auto Publicize to FACEBOOK function…..
I have only been using Jetpack for about 2 weeks and everything was perfectly fine until about 5 days ago, when the auto Publicize to Facebook stopped using my Featured image from the post and grabbing an image from my website sidebar of my website http://thecrewenews.co.uk/
I have had to unlink the Facebook connection.
http://www.facebook.com/CreweNewsIf you scroll to the posts dated around 13th May, you will see the problem. The sponsor us image has been grabbed from the sidebar.
BUT…..
If i use the SHARE button within the post it grabs the correct featured image… all current posts at http://www.facebook.com/CreweNews can be seen as having the fetaured image displayed by doing this.
PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!
leonardogsouza,
As you can see, both of those pages get the following warning from Facebook:
The ‘og:image’ property should be explicitly provided, even if a value can be inferred from other tags.
And neither of those posts actually have an image associated with it. The solution, then, would be for you to include an image in your posts; depending on your theme, maybe even a Featured Image (Post Thumbnail). Try that, and let me know how it goes.
Jason,
2 things. First, Facebook complains about meta tags being in the body and not the head. I looked at your source (even with your copy-protection plugin, it’s possible to view the source, all it does is remove my ability to right-click on elemtns on your site, thus making debugging more difficult; I’d suggest removing that plugin). I didn’t see any meta tags in the body, but I DID see a the following in the head
<div align="center"><noscript> <div style="position:fixed; top:0px; left:0px; z-index:3000; height:100%; width:100%; background-color:#FFFFFF"> <div style="font-family: Tahoma; font-size: 14px; background-color:#FFF000">To see this page as it is meant to appear, we ask that you please enable your Javascript!</div></div> </noscript></div>
There should not be a div element outside of the noscript. You should remove this or fix it. This is likely what’s confusing Facebook.
However, there is also this message from Facebook:
Provided og:image is not big enough. Please use an image that’s at least 200×200 px. Image ‘http://thecrewenews.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Crewe-News-logo-with-banner1.jpg’ will be used instead.
You need to supply larger images in your post of you want Facebook to use them. For example, the image in that post is 198 by 300px, just small enough for FB to not use it.
If you have any posts with images that should definitely have been grabbed by FB, try running them through the FB debugger to see if there any other issues with them.
Thank you Richard.
However, I always put a Featured Image on my posts. That’s why I don’t understand why some posts go to Facebook with the image and some don’t..leonardogsouza, but those 2 posts don’t actually display an image. Does your theme support Featured Images yet not display them? I can’t actually download the theme without becoming a member of MyThemeShop, to see for myself. Are you comfortable with looking at your theme files to see if it is supposed to display the featured image?
You mean an image inside the post, right?
It is free to become a member of MyThemeShop, but I want to save you the trouble. What file should I look into? So the image that I choose to be a Featured Image (to show as the post thumbnail) should also be inside the post?Hi Richard, just to confirm… Yes my theme uses Featured Images in EVERY post. I have been playing around with it a little and have noticed if i included the featured image it DOES NOT post it (an image), BUT if i leave it out it does give an image from within the post !!!! (if 1 is included)
I am not to bright at fiddling with HTML so would require an easy step by step run through to attempt to fix anything.
It was all working brilliantly, but then 1 day it stopped 🙁
Anything you can do to assist would be greatly appreciated 🙂
As for Image size…
This Image – Uploaded on: May 20, 2013 @ 14:33
File URL:
File name: a-2.jpg
File type: JPG
Dimensions: 312 × 229was the featured image AND within this post – http://thecrewenews.co.uk/police-investigate-death-of-a-20-year-old-man-from-crewe/
And it DID NOT post the image to the FB publish here -> http://www.facebook.com/CreweNews
so the minimum size of 200x200px image is NOT the problem.
So what next?
