• Hi all,

I’m setting up a WordPress to use for a microsite for my company (it’s a multinational corporation). My issue is that I need some entries to be viewable only through the company network/ intranet without having to assign a user profile to each employee. I also need some entries to be viewable externally, to the public.

I want these network/ intranet entries to be searchable and viewable only to people on the network/ intranet. IE. I do not want the public to be able to search or find these entries, or to even know they exist.

-Employees on the network/ intranet/ connected through VPN should be able to view and search (through the search form or by categories/ archives) ALL entries.

-The Public viewing the site externally should be able to view and search (through the search form or by categories/ archives) ONLY PUBLIC entries.

Is there a way to do this on one blog/ installation of WordPress? What would it require? A firewall? I w

As a side note, is it possible to manage two blogs through one dashboard? I’m assuming I’d have to use WP-Hive or WordPress MU?

    Thanks in advance!

  • I can’t answer all of your questions, but what you want cannot be fulfilled solely by an intranet. By definition, the Intranet would only be viewable within the company LAN, so outsiders wouldn’t ever have a way of getting to the site, except through VPN.

What you are describing is a public installation of WP with restricted access to content for logged in users. If you want the access to be available without logging in, you might consider a plugin that passes authentication from Active Directory if you are on a Windows network (I’m not sure if one exists). There are some that will authenticate with AD, but I don’t know if you can get one to automatically pass the login with prompting the user.

    Hope this helps to clarify.

    brockangelo, thanks for the reply.

It appears I misspoke, so forget the intranet part.

I just need some entries to be visible and searchable by employees on the network (no matter which office/ country they are in), without having to have WP accounts or anything, but not visible by the general public.

Our site is run through SharePoint and our network has both PCs and Macs on it.

bump… anyone else? this is becoming somewhat urgent. Would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks.

why not use a single shared account for all employees to view ‘private’ content? it still requires logging in, but it’s trivial and basically solves your problem.

without some sort of authentication, how is WP going to know these users are employees? there is no way.
