Product listing stuck on two columns after update

After updating to 2.1.7 everything else seems to be working fine, but the product catalogs are listing two huge images (336px x 336px) in a row, instead of the four columns as before. I am using twenty eleven as my theme and I have tried all the suggested fixes but nothing changes the number of columns. It i stuck at two although the default should be 4.
How can I get this changed?? I tried switching to twenty thirteen theme but no changes, stil two columns. The WC debugging tool also shows that nothing is overriding my WC settings so I am thinking this would be a problem with WC, not the WordPress theme. If I remove the default WC stylesheet the product thumbnails get displayed the right size, but all in a bulleted list with one column. Please help!
