This morning I noticed that my site has problems. At the top of the page is this string:

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /home/content/v/i/r/virtualdoyle/html/drawingattention/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 520

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /home/content/v/i/r/virtualdoyle/html/drawingattention/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 535

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /home/content/v/i/r/virtualdoyle/html/drawingattention/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 542

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in /home/content/v/i/r/virtualdoyle/html/drawingattention/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 578

Deprecated: Function set_magic_quotes_runtime() is deprecated in /home/content/v/i/r/virtualdoyle/html/drawingattention/wordpress/wp-settings.php on line 18

I have no idea what this means or how to go about fixing it. Is anyone able to point me in a direction?

I'm afraid it has been a while since I updated so I don't know what version I'm using.

    Thanks in advance.

Hoping that something can be done so I don't lose everything.

I'd really like to move it all over to the wordpress.com platform since it would be easier to manage.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions would be much appreciated!

    Thank you!!

Sounds like you are using a version earlier than 3.2. Some syntax used in that version and earlier has been deprecated in the newer versions of PHP.

You will need to upgrade to a newer version of WP. This might not be totally straight forward since some plugins you use may not be compatible with the newer versions.

Whatever you do, back up the site, including the database before you do anything else.

Then see the Codex article 'Updating WordPress' for steps to follow to update.

Thank you! I have no idea how to do these things but I will contact the provider of my server and see if they can help.

    Thanks again.
