    Hello

I have a site on GoDaddy (only because I was ‘given’ the site… I would rather host elsewhere (maybe the end of the year I will move it) anyway… I was able to setup multiple subdomains on the server and I was able to install/active the Network in WP. But now I’m lost as to how the site should react. The subdomains URLs are all showing correctly in the browser’s address cell but all the subdomains are showing the original domain site. And this is where I am confused. Where do I change the themes and plugins? I see all the subdomains list under “My Sites” but when I pick “dashboard” for any of the subdomains I get a blank page. Same happens when I select “New Post”. But I can pick the original domain site. One last note… On Goddy, when I set up the subdomains I was only given two options 1. Forward Only or 2. Forward with Masking. Which should I choice? I picked the second. Is that correct? Also, I had to set the subdomain to forward to the original domain.

So as you can see, I have an issue with my site set on GoDaddy. Please help… if you can. Thanks in advance.

You mean foobar.domain.com redirect to domain.com?

You’re not supposed to be FORWARDING the subdomains, but IIRC they don’t let you use wildcard subdomains, so you have to manually set them up.

I don’t know what the goDaddy control panel looks like, but basic cPanel lets you make a subdomain of foobar, and automatically wants it to live in /public_html/foobar. You just change that to ONLY /public_html and you’re good.

    Thanks for the response!

Unfortunately I do not have cPanel on goDaddy. When a user on new Subdomain to a hosted site on goDaddy, they have to add it as a forwarding subdomain. However, there is a DNS manager where I can see the subdomains mapping/pointing to the site’s IP address. These displays in a table labled ‘A (Host)’ and I see a CNAME table where I assume I would want to add the subdomains? If so would I be correct to say i would have to add the subdomains like this:
    CNAME (Alias): sub1
    Point to: *.mydomainname.com
(Please understand these are the two columns listed in this table.

I also see a table labled NS(Nameserver) but I’m not sure if thata where I should be adding the information.

Forgive me, but I new to playing around to actually setting up the back like this.

Thanks for your time and help.

    Hi
I am hosting my multisite website with godaddy. I am able to use without any problem
    After installing wordpress multisite,
1.please make sure subdomains are pointing to root directory (same as primary domain) under domain management/subdomains
    2. In DNS manager point all subdomains to same ip address of primary domain under A records in DNS manager and multisites are in active status in wordpress
If you want to view my website is http://www.dailywebday.com and subdomains are ca.dailywebday.com, uk.dailywebday.com,fr.dailywebday.com – all these are associated with multisite under single database.
Major problem now I have is database is now 653mb for all my 6 multisites and limit for single database is 1gb.
If I tried to install another wordpress in subdirectory to point subdomains to another database, permalink with postname is not working, it is getting redirected to primary domain and it accepts only default permalink without postname/date .
For me, multisite with single database is working in godaddy account.
    Thanks

    Hello Murali,

First, thank you very much for the response.

I see what you have done with the subdomains in the DNS manager and I had done the same thing. I had my subdomains pointing to root directory and the same IP address. The subdomains open (or should I say point to) the same default but with the subdomain url.

So now my question is… how do I get the site to display only the content related to the selected subdomains as you do on your site? How or where do I change the themes and plugins for each of the subdomains?

I would like to create a menu like you have where the user could select a give local community event.

On another note, but on subject, is it possible to set up users to be redirected to a default subdomains? For example, add a variable flag in the database, which associates the user to a default local community event?

(I see so many advantages to using subdomains and therefor would love to get this to work.)

    Thanks again for your help.

    Cheers
    Leo

    Murali,

I jumped the gun… I went back and noticed my URL for the subdomain was NOT the same as the default site. I changed it and it worked.

I will play around and change the subdomain site and then report back all the details of the troubles I had so others will learn from my mistakes.

I also would like to thank Ipstenu!

    Cheers!

muraliwebworld, open your own topic if you want DB help 🙂 SharDB or HyperDB may be needed.

Thanks to the two of you for your help!!! I now have it running.

It seem all I really need to do was set my sub-domains to the same IP address, in the A Records, as the primary domain. (In other words, I over-complicated it.) duh!
