Hi all. I have recently built a website for a client/friend and once she signed it off I wanted to import it from my test site to her domain. This process, which should have been relatively simple, has been extraordinarily challenging.

I have managed to deal with the majority of the numerous problems I have encountered, mostly as a result of the particular limitations of the host server she uses, but my final problem is with images, and especially with the image gallery.

For some time I couldn’t insert an image gallery but that seems to be possible now. However, the images within the gallery are not including descriptions and when I click on the images they are not linking to the media file but instead the image is appearing above the gallery in the page – and not in its entirety but with a size and dimension limited to the space allowed by the page.

    I have tried the following:
    – deactivating plugins
    – restarting my computer (!)
    – attempting the same procedure in a different page
    – emptying my Safari cache

but none of these has made a difference.

I have also tried to use other gallery plugins, including NewGen and WP Simple Gallery. The former has not worked because it tells me that the upload limit from the host is 2M, so I have abandoned this plugin. And the latter hasn’t really worked for me.

I can’t help but suspect that the host server is at the root of the problem but they are not overly helpful and, obviously, don’t provide WordPress support. What I know of the host set-up is that the memory limit in the php.ini has been increased to 80M and they tell me that the safe mode is also turned off – so it shouldn’t be either of these things.

The original site I built is here. The new site that I am trying to export it to is here, with the first troublesome image gallery here (I am not bothering to upload other galleries until I have sorted out the problem with this first attempt).

The website is for an artist, so it is essential that I solve this problem. An artist’s site without images would be very sad indeed 🙁

I would be grateful for any help – this is driving me crazy. Thanks!

I forget to mention I am using the imbalance theme.

So, I have worked out a solution. The gallery configuration is not exactly the same, but it will do (I hope).

    Here’s what I did:

I reduced the size of all the images to between 500 -750 KB. I uploaded them individually (tiresome) and then I followed the advice from this thread which suggested I upload the images to the individual pages in which I wanted to place the gallery. I then went back to the media library to make sure that each image was attached to the appropriate page (if it wasn’t attached to a page it didn’t show up even if the upload was successful).

Interestingly, I found that any edits I made to images were not showing when I inserted them into a page or post. I solved this by editing them offline. I don’t know why the edits didn’t work via the media library.

Hope this is helpful to someone. I found this experience extremely frustrating and I still haven’t had any response from the host support despite being told my query had been escalated in importance 🙁
